ARLO "DUKE" STERNER

RANK/POSITION: Safety
Lieutenant. Former 1st Assistant Chief in MFD and in Wolcott Fire
Department.
DATE APPOINTED TO THE DEPARTMENT:
1953
YEARS OF SERVICE: 40
QUALIFICATIONS: Vermont State Fire
Instructor, Chauffer for all trucks in the station.
OTHER INFORMATION: Honorary member
of the Wolcott Fire Department.
I came to the ranks of MFD as
a "rookie" in 1953 at which time the front line pumper was a 1948 Mack, open
cab, 1000-1000 pumper and we all rode on the tailgate, up to 9 men, often
more. Next was the 1924 Maxim Pumper and a 1926 Ladder, ladders only.
Starting as a Fire Police, where most start. Eventually via "up through the
ranks" to being a pump
operator (MPO/Chauffeur) under the guidance of a respected member by name of
Don Dubuque who was a real task master of pumping. Today my speciality in Fire
Service Training is Pumps & Pumping.
As time went on the rank of First
Assistant Chief was earned and then as is the usual thing the Officers do not
last more than 12 to 15 years and a new generation takes over.
In 1974 I left MFD, moved to Wolcott
and assisted in their formation of a stronger department and a new fire
station dedicated to Eugene Gates who was a benefactor and Selectman. Gained
the rank of Assistant Chief in WFD for a few years when once again the "older
guys" were considered to have gone by. In 1988 I was requested by then Chief
Wayne R. Camley of MFD to return and become Engine Captain whereby the
equipment was brought up to date mechanically via expenditure of money, time,
records and new SOP's.
Being old an often thought of as not
knowing much I was "promoted" to MFD Safety Officer, the rank I still hold. An
enjoyable position as long as everything goes right.
I still answer alarms for WFD,
live within site of station, usually driving a pumper alone to a scene. WFD is
like many other departments today in that help is very short in the daytime
during normal working hours.
I still serve as a State
Instructor and very much enjoy instructing those who will be present long
after I am gone.
It is my aim to assist MFD's
Chief Wally Reeve to maintain safety, health and welfare of our organization.
